Robots Meta & Canonical Checker
Inspect the rules and preferred URLs in a head fragment before reviewing the live page.
Paste only the contents between a page’s <head> tags. This checks up to 500 KB and 2,000 relevant tags locally. The Googlebot summary combines robots and googlebot index/follow directives. It does not inspect HTTP headers, robots.txt or live indexing.
Supply a head fragment or load an example, then check the tags.
Read the supplied rules together
A generic robots tag and a Googlebot-specific tag can contribute to the same Googlebot policy. For the index/follow summary, noindex and nofollow remain restrictive when index or follow is also present. The none shorthand means noindex and nofollow; all does not cancel a restriction.
The checker retains detected crawler-specific tags in the inventory. Only robots and googlebot contribute to this summary. Other directives, including snippet limits and unavailable_after dates, remain visible as supplied text but their validity, timing and precedence are not evaluated.
Compare canonical destinations
- Enter the original page URL, including its real path and query.
- Copy only the contents of the head element, without its opening and closing tags.
- Check the tags and review every canonical destination.
- Confirm whether a different target is intentional before changing anything.
- Export the inventory and verify the published page separately.
Canonical tags are counted individually, even if two resolve to the same URL. Relative destinations use the first supplied base href or the page URL. The checker flags relative notation, fragments, non-web addresses, credentials and canonical annotations with hreflang, lang, media or type qualifiers. A different origin is a review prompt rather than proof of an error.
URL comparison retains query strings, path case and trailing slashes. A fragment is ignored for the document comparison but still flagged on the canonical target. The tool does not guess whether two different addresses contain duplicate content.
Keep the result within its scope
The preview shows 100 tags and the CSV includes all reviewed tags within the limit. Formula-like CSV values receive an apostrophe prefix. Keep the original markup because this precaution changes those exported cell values.
The fragment is parsed in an inert template. Pasted scripts are not executed, and supplied markup is never inserted into the visible page. Nested template contents, malformed-head validation, actual tag placement, JavaScript changes, HTTP X-Robots-Tag and Link headers, redirects and Google-selected canonicals are outside this check.
Read the worked guide to checking noindex and canonical tags for a four-tag example and follow-up decisions. Use the Meta Tag Generator to prepare replacement markup or the HTML Link Analyzer to review page links.
